Architect (MSc., Faculty of Architecture, KU Leuven), PhD- candidate (KU Leuven)

Hannes Van Damme is an architect and researcher living in Belgium. He concluded his studies with an autonomous master dissertation project within the research project on Streetscape Territories of Dr. Kris W. B. Scheerlinck and presented his work to an audience of international experts in the New York Times Building, NY. He collaborated and facilitated in expositions and workshops on Streetscape Territories research projects hosted at the New York Pratt Institute and KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture. He worked within the project team of Terreform, a non-profit institute founded by Michael Sorkin and dedicated to research into the forms and practices of just and sustainable urbanism. Terreform has been engaged for the past six years in a long-term alternative master planning project for a completely self-sufficient New York City.

Later on has been working as a project architect in a New York based architecture office with projects in Europe and the United States. Currently he is working as an academic researcher within the research project of Streetscape Territories and also planning to start a doctoral research titled ‘Productive Sidewalks in New York: Achieving Critical Insights about Multiple Temporary Uses of Space and Changing Policies’.

The PhD combines his local expertise and the research he already obtained in New York on the use and appropriation of sidewalks.

In addition to his ambitions as researcher, he works a freelance architect for offices and clients based in the United States.
